Tanner — Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how Dantes Creative Labs LLC collects, uses, shares, and protects personal information in connection with Tanner (the “App”). We are a small, independent studio, and we built Tanner to be private by design: it has no accounts, no analytics, no tracking, and no third-party advertising or software development kits. Your skin type, your settings, and the forecast the App has cached stay on your device. The only information that leaves your device is an approximate location, sent without any identifier to a weather service, so the App can fetch the local UV forecast. Tanner is a sun-timing tool for everyday use — it is not medical advice and makes no medical claims.
1. Introduction & who we are
Dantes Creative Labs LLC (“DCL,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) is an Arizona limited liability company and independent software studio based in Phoenix, Arizona, United States. We build mobile applications and web tools. This policy describes our privacy practices for Tanner, a mobile application we publish and distribute exclusively through the Apple App Store (the “App”). It also covers your interactions with us in connection with the App, such as support requests.
For the purposes of the EU and UK General Data Protection Regulation (together, “GDPR”), DCL is the “controller” of the personal information described in this policy. For the purposes of U.S. state privacy laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (“CCPA/CPRA”), DCL is the “business” that determines the purposes and means of processing.
EU/UK representative (Article 27). DCL has not appointed a representative in the European Union or the United Kingdom under Article 27 of the GDPR. If a representative is later appointed, that representative's name and address will appear here and in the How to contact us section. Until then, individuals in the EEA or UK may contact us directly at contact@dantescreativelabs.com.
You can reach us at any time at contact@dantescreativelabs.com. Full contact details are in the How to contact us section below.
2. Scope of this policy
This policy applies to personal information we handle through the App and to app users and other individuals worldwide who interact with us in connection with it. It does not apply to:
- The practices of Apple or other third parties that operate the app store and payment systems through which the App is distributed and purchased. Apple has its own privacy policy that governs its handling of your information.
- The practices of the weather service the App queries to fetch the UV forecast, described in Location & the weather service. That service has its own privacy and terms.
- Third-party websites, products, or services that we link to. See Third-party links & services.
Where this policy and any in-App notice conflict, the in-App notice controls for the specific feature it describes.
3. Information the App handles
Tanner is designed to collect as little as possible. We do not operate accounts, we run no analytics, we do no tracking, and we embed no third-party advertising or software development kits (SDKs). The information the App works with — your skin type, your settings, and the UV forecast it has fetched — is stored on your device, in a container shared between the App and its widget, and is not transmitted to DCL. DCL operates no servers that receive your personal information.
The single exception is an approximate location that the App sends to a third-party weather service to retrieve the UV forecast; that is described in detail in Location & the weather service.
3.1 Information stored on your device
The table below summarizes what the App keeps on your device and why.
| Data handled | Where it lives | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Skin type (Fitzpatrick type) | On your device, in the app-and-widget shared container. Not transmitted to DCL. | To calculate a burn-avoidance ceiling and shape your daily tanning window. |
| App settings and preferences | On your device, in the app-and-widget shared container. Not transmitted to DCL. | To remember your choices, such as whether the optional notification is on. |
| Cached UV forecast | On your device, in the app-and-widget shared container. Not transmitted to DCL. | To display today's window and the days ahead, and to power the widget, without re-fetching constantly. |
Sources of information. We collect information directly from you (for example, the skin type you select), and the App fetches the UV forecast from the weather service using an approximate location as described below. We do not obtain personal information about you from any other source.
Sensitive information. We do not operate accounts and do not collect names, contact details, precise persistent identifiers, or special categories of sensitive personal information. Your skin type is used only on your device to compute your window and is not transmitted to DCL or used to infer other characteristics about you.
No advertising, analytics, or tracking. The App contains no third-party advertising networks, advertising SDKs, analytics SDKs, or tracking technologies, and we do not sell or share your personal information. See How information is shared.
4. Location & the weather service
To tell you when the sun is right where you are, the App needs to know, approximately, where you are, and it needs a UV forecast for that place. It obtains the forecast from Open-Meteo (open-meteo.com), an independent third-party weather service.
4.1 What is sent, and how
When the App fetches a forecast, it sends an approximate location — coordinates rounded to roughly one kilometer — to Open-Meteo's public weather API. The request is:
- Coarse. The location is rounded before it is sent, so it identifies a general area rather than your exact position.
- Keyless and identifier-free. The request carries no account, no API key, no advertising identifier, no device identifier, and no name — nothing that identifies you or your device. It is a request for the UV forecast at a set of approximate coordinates.
- For one purpose only. The response — the UV forecast — is used to compute your daily window and is cached on your device.
Open-Meteo is an independent service, not a processor acting on DCL's instructions; when the App queries its public API, Open-Meteo receives the approximate coordinates and handles them under its own privacy policy and terms, which are available at open-meteo.com. Because the request is keyless and identifier-free, we do not send Open-Meteo any information that identifies you.
4.2 Your control over location
The App uses your device's location services to determine the approximate area to forecast. You control this through your device's system settings: you can grant or deny location access to the App, and you can change that choice at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services. If you deny or revoke location access, the App may instead let you set a location manually, or certain features may not work. The App does not maintain a location history on our servers — we have none.
5. Notifications
Tanner can show you one optional heads-up, roughly thirty minutes before your tanning window opens. This notification is local to your device: it is scheduled and delivered on your device from the forecast already cached there. It is not a push notification sent from a DCL server, and enabling it does not transmit any information to us. You can turn the notification on or off in the App, and you can control notification permissions at any time in your device's system settings.
6. How information is used
The App uses the information described above to:
- Calculate and display your daily tanning window and the days ahead, using your skin type and the fetched UV forecast;
- Power the home-screen and lock-screen widget from the forecast cached on your device;
- Schedule and deliver the optional local heads-up notification, if you enable it;
- Remember your settings and preferences between sessions; and
- Respond to you if you contact us for support, using only the information you choose to include in your message.
Because this processing happens on your device, DCL does not receive your skin type, your settings, your location, or your forecast. We do not build advertising or behavioral profiles, and we do not use analytics or tracking. See How information is shared.
7. Legal bases for processing (EU/UK)
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or another jurisdiction with similar requirements, we rely on the following legal bases in the limited circumstances where any processing occurs:
- Performance of a contract
- To provide the App you request — including fetching the UV forecast for your approximate area so the App can compute your window (GDPR Article 6(1)(b)).
- Consent
- For access to your device's location and for delivering notifications, which you grant and can withdraw at any time through your device settings, without affecting processing already carried out (GDPR Article 6(1)(a)).
- Legitimate interests
- To respond to support requests you send us and to keep the App working securely, where those interests are not overridden by your rights and freedoms (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)).
- Legal obligation
- To comply with applicable laws, regulations, and lawful requests (GDPR Article 6(1)(c)).
9. International data transfers
DCL is based in the United States, but because the App does not send your personal information to DCL, we do not receive or store it in any country. When the App fetches a forecast, the approximate, identifier-free location request is served by Open-Meteo's infrastructure, which may process it in the European Union or elsewhere under Open-Meteo's own terms. If you use the App from outside your home country, that keyless request may be handled in countries with data-protection laws different from those where you live. You may contact us at contact@dantescreativelabs.com with any questions.
10. Data retention
Information that stays on your device — your skin type, your settings, and the cached UV forecast — remains for as long as you keep it in the App. Deleting the App deletes all of it; there is no separate copy on any DCL server, because we do not operate one for this purpose.
The location requests the App makes to Open-Meteo are keyless and identifier-free and are handled by Open-Meteo under its own retention practices. If you email us for support, we keep your message only for as long as needed to help you and to keep a reasonable record, and then delete it, unless a longer period is required to comply with our legal obligations or resolve disputes.
11. Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures designed to protect information — the most important of which is architectural: keeping your skin type, settings, and forecast on your device, operating no accounts, collecting no analytics, and sending the weather service only a coarse, identifier-free location over an encrypted connection. Requests to the weather service are made over HTTPS.
No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. You are responsible for keeping your device secure, including with a passcode and up-to-date software.
12. Children's privacy
The App is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 in a manner that would require verifiable parental consent under the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (“COPPA”) or similar laws. In any event, the App operates no accounts and collects no analytics or identifiers from any user.
In the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, the minimum age at which a child can consent to the processing of personal information (the “digital age of consent”) is set by local law and ranges from 13 to 16 depending on the country. Where you are in the EEA or UK, we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone below the applicable local minimum age without the consent or authorization of a parent or guardian as required by that local law.
If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at contact@dantescreativelabs.com and we will take appropriate steps to delete it.
13. Your privacy rights & choices
You have choices about your information, and depending on where you live, you may have specific legal rights. Because your skin type, settings, and forecast stay on your device, you can exercise most of these choices directly — for example, by changing or clearing your data in the App, uninstalling the App (which deletes everything the App stored), or adjusting the App's location and notification permissions in your device settings.
13.1 California residents (CCPA/CPRA)
If you are a California resident, you have the right to:
- Know / access the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected about you, the sources, purposes, and categories of recipients;
- Delete personal information we have collected from you, subject to legal exceptions;
- Correct inaccurate personal information we maintain about you;
- Opt out of sale or sharing of your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising — note that we do not sell or share personal information, so there is nothing to opt out of;
- Limit the use and disclosure of sensitive personal information — we do not collect or use sensitive personal information to infer characteristics about you, so there is nothing to limit; and
- Not be discriminated against for exercising your privacy rights.
Categories of personal information. The table below maps the information described in Information the App handles and Location & the weather service to the categories of personal information enumerated under the CCPA/CPRA. We do not “sell” or “share” (for cross-context behavioral advertising) any category of personal information, and DCL itself receives almost none of it.
| CCPA category | Examples we handle | Sources | Business/commercial purpose | Categories of recipients |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Geolocation data | An approximate location rounded to roughly one kilometer, sent keyless and identifier-free | Your device's location services (with your permission) | Fetching the local UV forecast used to compute your window | Open-Meteo, the independent weather service (as a keyless, identifier-free request) |
| Commercial information | Confirmation of your App purchase; aggregated or anonymized sales data | From the App Store | Delivering and supporting your purchase of the App | Apple (as operator of the App Store and payment processor) |
| Other information you provide | Your skin type and app settings | Directly from you | Computing your tanning window; handled on your device only | Not disclosed to DCL servers or third parties |
You may exercise these rights by emailing contact@dantescreativelabs.com. You may use an authorized agent to submit a request on your behalf; we may ask the agent to provide proof of authorization. Because we do not maintain accounts or a user database, we may be unable to associate a request with information held by us — in most cases, the fastest way to delete everything is to uninstall the App.
13.2 EU, UK, and other regions (GDPR and similar laws)
If you are in the EEA, the UK, or a jurisdiction with comparable laws, you may have the right to request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information; to restrict or object to certain processing; to data portability; and to withdraw consent where processing is based on consent. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data-protection or supervisory authority.
13.3 How to exercise your rights
To make any privacy request, email us at contact@dantescreativelabs.com and tell us what you would like to do. We will respond within the timeframes required by applicable law. There is no charge to make a request in most cases, and we will not discriminate against you for making one.
14. Do Not Track & Global Privacy Control
Some browsers offer a “Do Not Track” (“DNT”) setting. Because there is no common industry standard for how to respond to DNT signals, we do not currently respond to them. We do, however, honor the Global Privacy Control (“GPC”) and similar opt-out preference signals where legally required. Because we do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising, a GPC signal will not change how we handle your information — there is nothing for it to opt out of.
15. Third-party links & services
The App relies on the Apple App Store for distribution and payment, and it queries the Open-Meteo weather service for the UV forecast. It may also contain links to third-party websites. We do not control these third parties, and this policy does not apply to their practices. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party service you use, including Apple's and Open-Meteo's.
16. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, the App, or applicable law. When we do, we will revise the “Effective” date above and post the updated policy at https://dantescreativelabs.com/products/tanner-uv-index/privacy/. If we make material changes, we will take additional steps to notify you where required by law. Your continued use of the App after an update takes effect means you have reviewed the current policy.
